Green Lantern Krispy Kreme Doughnut

This morning, I woke up to an image link of this fantastically sweet treat. The puppy-daddy, who is a huge fan of anything comic book related, showed me this odd-looking doughnut. (Also, I have been ordered made to memorize the Green Lantern oath.)
The Green Lantern Kreme Doughut
In time for the movie, Krispy Kreme's latest offering is a Green Lantern Kreme Doughnut. Krispy Kreme's newest sugar creation is made of rich chocolate dough iced with chocolate made with Hershey's Milk Chocolate, powdered with sugar and topped with green (lantern) jelly. Sound good?
Hello there, Mr. Reynolds. *waggles eyebrows*
Hurry then, and head to the nearest Krispy Kreme branch and go get some. Green Lantern will be showing in cinemas starting June 16.

And here is the Green Lantern oath (because memorizing this was a requirement, not an option): "In brightest day, in blackest night, no evil shall escape my sight. Let those who worship evil's might, beware my power.. Green Lantern's light!"

Oven Toaster Recipes: Instant Pinoy Bibingkinitan

Feeling oddly industrious last Saturday morning, I rummaged our kitchen shelves for something easy to busy myself with (besides playing with the cutest dog ever). Shortly after, I had a small box of Maya Oven Toaster Bibingka cake mix in my hands and I was raring to make my own homemade bibingka.
Ingredients for homemade bibingka
The recipe on the box seemed easy enough. Aside from the mix, I only needed 1 chicken egg, 1 red egg/salted duck egg (optional), 2 tablespoons of melted butter, half a cup of water, and some grated cheese (optional). Easy! All those can be found in my fridge on any given day.

It's an oven toaster mix, of course you'd need an oven toaster and also a regular baking pan. I opted to use a cupcake pan to end up with mini-bibingkas (like those you can get from food courts) instead of just one chunk of bibngka. Luckily, I still had some cupcake paper cups from last week's two minute microwave cupcakes.
My uncooked bibingkinitan
What to do:

First, crack open the red egg and chop them up into small cubes (you can also opt to just slice them thinly, chopping is much easier) and set it aside. Grate some cheese (I love cheese so I used lots) and then set that aside.

In a medium sized mixing bowl, mix the bibingka mix, water, butter, and some of the grated cheese for good measure. Place the paper cupcake cups in the cupcake pans and distribute the mixture equally. Sprinkle the chopped up red eggs and grated cheese (the more the merrier!) on top of each cup. And then put the pan inside your oven toaster and set it to cook for five minutes.
Fresh off the oven: Warm, fluffy, and tasty homemade bibingkinitan
Then you can do a quick clean up of the mess you made and as soon as you're done, your bibingkas will be ready to go. Fresh off the oven are your fluffy and delightful homemade bibingkinitans. They are surprisingly fluffly (much fluffier than the microwave cupcakes) and actually taste like those heartwarming bibingkas you can only get during Christmas season. I will definitely be doing this again.

Prep time: 10-15 minutes
Cooking time: 5 minutes

List of stuff you need:
  • 1 Maya Bibingka cake mix
  • 1 egg
  • 1 itlog na maalat
  • 2 tbsp melted butter
  • 1/2 cup of water
  • cheese
  • cupcake cups
  • cupcake pan
  • oven toaster

Lachis Classic Sans Rival - Delightful Davao (Part 5)

It seemed fitting to end the Delightful Davao series by recounting our afternoon at Lachi's, the place that EVERYONE recommended. This bakery-cum-restaurant seems to have gained a huge following and has won the favor of even the most critical Manileños.
Lachi's Classic Sans Rival (p50+/-)
As soon as friends found out about the trip to Davao, a lot of them told us not to leave without trying the bakeshop's famous sans rival. We asked our tourguide Kuya K about it and he gladly obliged (our want to fatten ourselves up some more). So one rainy afternoon in Davao, we drove over to Ruby street and shortly found ourselves settled inside the small cafe. Nomming, of course.
Actually, the cafe was full to bursting when we arrived (surprising because it was raining like kitties and puppies) and there weren't enough tables and chairs to fit our semi-large group. So we checked out the pretty cakes on display while waiting (salivating the entire time). Cake slices were fairly priced at a range of 50-100 pesos and we were excited to stuff our faces with the sweet stuff.
Cream Custard Cake (p48) and Cashew Mocha Torte (p52)
We had to try the sans rival of course, everyone seems to be all agog over it. They have a durian variant that was sadly not available (Bim was happy) so the first orders were a couple slices of the very famous Lachi's Classic Sans Rival. What I liked about it is that the wafery cake was sweet but not sickeningly so and the layers were crunchy but soft (is that weird?).
Regal Chocolate Torte (p60) and Carrot Walnut Cake (p48)
Being in Lachi's where all the cakes were on display, we couldn't just try one cake. We had to order a few more (diabetes, here we come)

My favorite would have to be the Cream Custard Cake which was a chiffon cake with light cream in the middle and sweet custard on top. The Cashew Mocha Torte and Regal Chocolate Torte were both delicious (similar to chocolate mousse) while  the Carrot Walnut Cake is a classic that's a steal for its price.

They're more than just a cake shop and have a full menu of breakfast, lunch and dinner nomz. Since we didn't get to try them, I thought to post the menu, just in case you wanted to see what's available. When you're in Davao, you have to go and visit Lachi's, it's definitely worth it.

Classic Pinoy Desserts - Turon

The turon is a classic Pinoy dessert. Fried saging saba (cardava bananas) enveloped in egg lumpia wrapper sweetened with brown muscovado sugar. They're best eaten hot off the fryer; either as merienda or as dessert to cap off a nice meal.

While hot turon is widely available every afternoon in nearly every corner of Makati, Taguig is a different story altogether. Since transferring to the Taguig office, I haven't been able to satisfy my cravings for these sweet treats. And that is why I'm happy to have gotten some good ones the last couple of weekends.

Jay-J's Inasal, Timog

I got my first turon fix last week from Jay-J's Inasal at Timog, Quezon City-
Jay-J's turon (p0)

The best thing about these sweets is that they're free. Yup, you read that right, these treats cost nothing. As long as you dine at Jay-J's, they'll give you and your party some of their special turon for dessert on the house! The wrapper was a bit thicker than I'd have preferred, but other than that, Jay-J's turons are pretty good- they're sweet, bite-sized, and nicely served on top of a banana leaf.

Jay-J's Inasal also has a branch at Ortigas, near the Home Depot along Julia Vargas street. Incidentally, Ortigas was where I was able to try the turon-gasmic turons of Oh Wow Turon!

Oh Wow Turon!, Banchetto

My second turon fix came from Oh Wow Turon!-
"Have a Turon-gasm now!" is Oh Wow Turon!'s tagline

They can be found at Banchetto, that Friday night to Saturday morning food market along F. Ortigas Jr. street. They have three kinds of turon- plain (p20 for 3pcs), with langka (p25 for 3pcs), and turon valencia (sprinkled with pinipig, p25 for 3pcs). All fan-tas-tic! Turon Valencia is my favorite. They're neatly wrapped and have just the right amount of sugar, the bananas inside were perfectly soft, and the pinipig sprinkles added a nice crunch.

Try them and you won't be disappointed for sure. I'll have to go back to Banchetto again to try some of the other stalls there, there are just so many interesting ones! I'll write about it on BaconTunaMelt soon enough, watch for it. ^^,
